California's next ShakeOut drill is October 15, 2026, at 10:15 a.m. local time. Cal OES encourages households, workplaces and schools to use the event to practice earthquake safety. You can also choose another drill time that works for your household. This is a preparedness exercise, not a prediction that an earthquake will happen that day. Make the drill practical

Before October 15, use the official ShakeOut resources to plan how everyone in your household will participate, including anyone with access or mobility needs. Review your family communication plan, identify potential hazards in the home, and check your emergency supplies. If you manage a workplace, share the drill plan with staff rather than assuming everyone knows what to do. Follow current emergency-management guidance for your circumstances. Keep preparation and insurance questions separate

A safety drill is also a useful reminder to find your policy documents, but preparation does not establish insurance coverage. The California Department of Insurance explains that homeowners and renters policies generally do not cover earthquake damage, while noting exceptions such as ensuing fire. Do not assume that every earthquake-related loss is excluded. Earthquake coverage is a separate question to review against the actual policy. California DOI earthquake insurance guide.

Bring these questions to a licensed broker:

  • Do I currently have earthquake coverage, and which policy provides it?
  • What deductible applies, and how is it calculated?
  • What limits and exclusions apply to the building, belongings and temporary living expenses?
  • Does the policy information reflect the property's current condition and use?

Do not assume that a quote or a conversation puts replacement coverage in force. Ask for confirmation of the effective date and terms before relying on any new arrangement.

Start with one clear question

If you want help reviewing your current documents or comparing available options, email quotes@bollinsure.com, call 562-268-9355, or start an insurance request. Tell us which coverage question you want answered. Avoid sending government identifiers, banking details or other sensitive records in an ordinary email.
